DFI Session 5

What did I learn about Manaiakalani and the pedagogy behind it?

We continue to understand the research which underpins Manaiakalani. The Cybersmart curriculum ties completely to NZ Curriculum.

Children hearing the language of Manaiakalani Cybersmart is important so it becomes embedded.
The Cybersmart curriculum is so important kids know how to be smart, positive digital citiziens.

Big Question - What is our digital footprint?
We must all know about the digital footprint we are leaving - we must be safe, responsible and respectful when online. Your behaviour online is YOU [not some detached idea]

Parents also need to to be taken through the Kawa Of Care and Cybersmart Curriculum. These are the things we are teaching your children and why. They may not be thinking about their own digital footprint.
Your digital footprint is for life [not just at school]

Manaiakalani partnered with Hapara to design Teacher Dashboard to make learning visible.
Stef says "Don't be shy about letting your class see Hapara."

Avoid term BYOD - use chrome books. We want chrome books as they sync with Hapara. .

My confidence, capability and workflow as a professional.

Chrome books should be allocated to specific children.
Digital Dig should be done at beginning of each year.

What have I learned to use with my learners?
• Explain Everything -See this  brief animation using Explain Everything- Many applications
Eg. storytelling

• Putting a screen shot into a doc on a chrome book
ctrl shift window key
• Screencastify- see practise

Confidence -personal capability.
Each week adds confidence. This is the main key to my capability. Practise,  revisiting finding real contexts to use the new tools is top of my list.

DFI 4 Dealing with Data

DFI 4
When embedding the chart image into my blog, by selecting interactive option I found I was  able to hover over each bar of the chart for exact data. You can Freeze [to prevent left column/top row moving. Tip: Drag Heavy grey lines on data sheet also Freeze. Use xxxx

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
  • Viewing the video created young student Mele gives you insight into where digital learning can take us. Such empowerment from young voices.
  • Blogging creates authentic audiences-a must for the amplification we are looking to achieve.
  • Beginning with sharing with fellow classmates reading and giving feedback.
  • Sharing and asking for help /feedback on half completed learning is a good idea especially for those children who never get finished. It might be a great motivator.
  • Sharing with family, near and far.
  • Next step could be Tuhi mai Tuhi Atu- sharing with children in other areas of NZ

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

  • Embedding into my blog[again] 😊
  • File -Publish to the web [or using three dots is quicker]
  • Command F will help you find your 4 xxxx
  • How to remove formatting
  • HTML - click on Compose first and write  word [Hi] this allows you to manipulate what you want to embed easier -then click HTML.
  • Google Sheets-format gives options. It is a good idea to duplicate your sheet in case you make an error especially if it is a shared doc. To prevent others messing with your sheet see tabs at base of form and 'Protect sheet'
  • Google Forms- I can create a form, use multiple choice questions, short answers, paragraph, insert images [Practise Form]

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
Ask  children seeking feedback to be quite specific about the sort of feedback they are looking for. Eg. What do you think about my orientation? Does it give the reader enough info? Do you think I have varied my sentence beginnings enough. My goal was to vary the length of my sentences. Which sentences do you think work well? Can you suggest any better words for 'said'?

Idea from Dave- write 3 ideas you have for your story and share. - ask peers for feedback on which you might use. Or pick a path idea- eg Should Tom jump the fence, go through the woods, or up spook hill?

Google forms- I was able to add questions, add images, [see practise form]

Try a questionaire -. Eg. Favourite holiday activity, place in NZ, add images

import the responses onto a layer in mymaps.

mymaps -see more in [ gsuite]

I will revisit maths plan from Geometry to Stats next week in order to use google sheets.
Allie shared use of screencast [see orange arrow icon]- a child could screen cast something they have learned and take class through the steps. Eg. Reinforce set up for a new doc.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

All of the above will support me in all of the above. I feel much better for  having had opportunities to revisit some areas that did not internalise last time. The group dynamic gives me confidence. Great team.

DFI Session 3

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and
pedagogy?

We know creative skills help children become problem solvers, confident clear communicators and more able to work collaboratively and we need to be thinking about how we are enabling creative opportunities in our teaching and learning. Point in case-Pt England use of drones and the celebrating diversity of cultures. is not about doing something better than others, it is about thinking, exploring, discovering, and imagining" (Kohl, 2008).
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a
professional
  1. Extending skills with use of Youtube
  2. Google sessions with Brett Petrillo Brett Petrillo

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
  1. Use of you tube:
- How to create playlists

Children in my class have been experimenting with Google Drawing -literacy and maths
based contexts. From today I can see so many possibilities for amplifying this learning.

2. More fun with google drawing - See 'About Me' on blog page.

3. I am creating a presentation in googleslides for our school pepeha, karakia,
my own pepeha.
We will revisit the school journal article -Pepeha so children can publish own to share.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my
personal life?

How to embed a post into my blog? - more support needed.

I am in the pit!!

Revisited DFI Day 1 Agenda -thank you Maria.

My class recently visited Kaiti Beach. We were looking at various seaweeds.
However discussion re Captain Cook, Young Nicks Head ensued and was of high interest.
Following session with Cheryl today using at the Explore tool,
I have posed some questions re Captain Cook. We will revisit the learning
using google slides and the Explore tool to share our findings.

Using tables to layout docs is an area I am working on with my class also.
Onetab extension is great.

DFI Session 2

More marvellous time to reflect and share with colleagues😄
What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?
Discussion re Summer LJ-something to think about.
Use of digital technology based on evidence [Manaiakalani -Woolf Fisher data ] opens doors to such a wealth of learning.

Thinking about SAMR model in more depth and how I might identify some areas I could begin moving  from sub/aug to moderation  -things that can be turbo charged /amplified eg use of jamboard for planning, note taking, organising text.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
The more confidence and capability I can bring will enhance my teaching and learning.

• Share the slides with staff- provides a revisit for myself and may help reinforce new learning by having to provide explanation to group.
•Jo's idea of sharing lists for spelling so children can self manage pace/ learning programme-more than substitution, moving to modification?
• Look into Google on air
•  Google Keep - keep in mind as an organising option.

• Demystifying features of calendar
• Search function gmail

Great Tips Today
day -d, week w, month m, takes you back to today t ,  new calendar event c,  settings s, agenda a

Need more help with sorting calendar!! Eg. personal events  as opposed to professional events/memos.

• Using hang-outs [remember mute ]. I have set up a practice time with Maria. I have 2 Toolkit hangouts  booked next week.
I have previously used hangouts for Toolkits. Today I learned to join and record a presentation as part of collaborative group. Technical glitches [Quick time player would not function] . Downloaded app Loom[video recorder] as alternative. Techie issues with settings can be problematic. However we recorded and trimmed a short clip based on a SLJ post.

• Toby mini-organising tabs. Have set up 'Good Morning" -5 tabs I use everyday first up.

Following Session 1-simplifying systems. The idea of using one doc with a Table of contents / Normal text/ View Doc outline
Have subsequently attempted to create 1 doc for my Teacher Aide weekly planning using
Table of Contents. I was previously using 1 doc but just adding new week at the top. This is a more user friendly and efficient system for TA and I to collaborate on. We can revisit, review,  add our observations and keep as evidence of what is working, what needs changing, what we could do differently.

What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
The word 'waffle' to add to 'omnibox'!

Creating hangouts - children could create presentations around the kawa of care principles.

SLJ response

Children creating own calendars.

OneTab

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
Better use of my calendar.
Use of settings -gmail [see Settings cog]
Use of Google Keep - organisation app [ Similar to Notes]

DFI Core Business

Time to reflect and share with colleagues

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

The history of Manaiakalani is interesting and gave greater understanding of how the innovation is creating greater success in teaching and learning. I identify with how we might empower our learners as they see their voice is valued and powerful. I am forming a stronger understanding of blended schooling improvement and digital learning.

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?
  • To link this Professional Learning to the STP's for TAI
  • Use of google groups as a tool [better privacy] -Groups.google.com
  • Omnibox! I never knew it was called that! It can also help you locate a doc.
  • Quick location of open tabs
  • Use of Drive -new learning -folder permissions
  • Investing in learning by giving time to the importance of teaching children routines in using Drive docs, just as you would in traditional classroom. Eg. In Drive -Begin in the folder you wish the doc to be filed in. Name the doc using your initials and a title. Using one doc for all writing with a Table of Contents with date is an excellent idea. Children are readily able to locate any writing easily.

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?
    • Teach Command shift V when copying and pasting
    • Use of Voice Typing - More opportunities to read -greater mileage.
      • Make part of Daily 4 in Literacy Rotation
      • A brainstorm activity
      • Finding the nouns/adjectives/a sentence you really like and why.
      • Explanations
      • Read your own writing / self editing help?
      • Adding to a doc -shared story.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?
That with small steps and open minds we can create exciting digital learning opportunities for our children. My confidence is improving with each small tip to contribute to bigger ideas. It gives you a deep understanding and empathy for how some children can find some learning challenging when faced with your own challenges.
